Yema balls are a popular Filipino sweet treat made from condensed milk and egg yolks. The mixture is cooked until it forms a thick, creamy paste, then rolled into balls and coated in sugar or coconut. The sweet treats are usually served on special occasions or as a snack. Yema balls are a favorite among kids and adults alike and make a great addition to any dessert platter.
Ingredients You’ll Need:
- 6 egg yolks
- 1 can (14oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1/2 kg white sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla essence
Cooking Procedures:
Step 1
In a pot over medium heat, put egg yolks, condensed milk, and vanilla essence. Mix until well blended.
Step 2
Bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat.
Step 3
Stir the mixture constantly as if you are scraping the bottom of the pan. (This must be done continuously to avoid burning the mixture and to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.)
Step 4
The mixture is ready when it is thick enough and you can form a ball from it. Remove from heat then let it cool for a while.
Step 5
Form the mixture into balls about 2 to 3 cm in diameter.
Step 6
Place the yema balls on a wide plate with white sugar then roll; once coated, pick up each ball with a toothpick.
Step 7
Wrap the yema balls in cellophane and twist both ends to secure them.
Step 8
Serve and enjoy your yema balls!
For special yema, you can add some crushed nuts of your choice. You can also coat it with caramelized sugar.
